EFL officially respond to Leicester City loophole that helped them overcome Leeds United
The Whites are heading back to the Premier League, and adding an extra sweetness to their top flight return is that all three sides who mocked them last year are going straight back down.
Leicester City were perhaps the biggest taunters of Leeds with players, staff and the club’s social media all taking turns to have a pop, now back in the EFL a year later in embarrassing fashion.
EFL release statement pertaining to recent Leicester loophole – Leeds affected too
Frustratingly for Leeds, Leicester headed out of the Championship despite ongoing investigations from the Premier League and EFL over PSR breaches, one for the 22/23 season and a forecasted one for the 23/24 campaign.
However, this season, the Foxes managed to swerve punishment on a loophole emerging through jurisdiction, unable to be punished by the Premier League whilst in the EFL, and then vice versa after gaining promotion under Enzo Maresca.
Now, the EFL have issued a statement confirming during a Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) that PSR guidelines are to be changed from next season onwards, essentially erasing the loophole of clubs being free from punishment when changing between divisions:
“The Club will then file its audited accounts and a final P&S calculation with whichever League it is in at that time in the following December.
“The EFL will be able to apply a sanction imposed by the Premier League’s independent Commission, with an equivalent provision included in the Premier League’s rules, should it be required.”
