Van Nistelrooy claimed just his third league win as City manager on Saturday afternoon, his side beating fellow-relegated club Southampton 2-0.

But having talked up preparing for the future over recent weeks, van Nistelrooy dismissed questions that looked to next season during his post-match press conference, saying he had “no reason” to think beyond the final three matches.

There have been moments this season where van Nistelrooy has cast doubt over his future in the emotional aftermath of a defeat, with his mood then changing and his commitment reaffirmed by the midweek pre-match press conference.

But his answers on Saturday did not tally with his recent comments and suggested he’s stopped looking at a future in the Championship with City.

Asked if he’d had any further talk with the hierarchy, van Nistelrooy said: “No. I said I was focusing on the coming three games and there’s no reason to think or speak beyond that, which means there’s no news on that.”
