Jayden Daniels’ Commanders Debut Ruined By Bucs In 37-20 Loss
The Washington Commanders had tons of hype and excitement around the team heading into Week 1, but were quickly deflated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 37-20 drubbing. Commanders’ rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was outdueled by former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield in a game in which the Bucs led wire to wire.
Daniels was efficient, connecting on 17-24 passes for 184 yards, but didn’t throw a touchdown. He also didn’t turn the ball over, which is good. It seemed like coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was just not calling for Daniels to go downfield, which is what he’s best at. … or eventually will be. He wasn’t under a lot of pressure as the Bucs only got to Daniels twice in the game. Daniels did impress on the ground, however, running 16 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. would contribute 40 yards and a touchdown of his own.
At the end of they day, teams sometimes have to take their lumps during a rebuild. The Bucs are a playoff team and looking to get back there again. Related: Commanders Bludgeoned By Buccaneers, 37-20 In Jayden Daniels’ Debut Following the game, coach Dan Quinn summed it up in a single phrase.
