Brenden Aaronson against Norwich City

Leeds star reveals reason for staying at Elland Road instead of pursuing top-flight football.

With Leeds struggling to secure a No. 10 during the summer transfer window, manager Daniel Farke has relied on Brenden Aaronson to take on that role for the Whites this season.

The 23-year-old has played in eight matches this season across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Aaronson has also logged a full 90 minutes in six of his last seven Championship matches.

After Leeds was relegated from the Premier League in 2023, Aaronson didn’t play during their first season in the Championship, where the team fell short of promotion after losing the Play-off Final to Southampton.

While at Union Berlin, Aaronson made 38 appearances, netting two goals and assisting another two. However, his time there was brief, as he returned to Leeds after the 2023-24 season.

Since making the jump to European football, Aaronson has played top-flight football. While on international duty with the United States, he discussed why he decided to remain with the Championship side rather than push for an exit.

“My decision going back to Leeds was, of course, one that took decisions,” Aaronson said at a news conference ahead of a pair of U.S. friendlies this month (h/t ESPN). “I had unfinished business at Leeds and so a lot of things pointed me back to Leeds, you know. That was the biggest thing for me. It was like a feeling and wanting to go back and prove myself again.”

“Since I’ve come back, I would say the first couple of weeks were pretty difficult mentally because you might see some fans getting upset with you and it’s just difficult.

“You got to reprove yourself again, but I’m proud of myself. I’ve come back and done really well. I won Player of the Month, which is really good for me. And that was a really great start. And now I just want to keep building and keep scoring and assisting and yeah, just keep getting better”

If Leeds want to earn promotion to the Premier League, they’ll need to count on Aaronson to help chip in the attack to secure an automatic promotion.
